Description

The ultimate goal of Universal Design for Learning is to support the development of expert learners. During the 5th Annual CAST UDL Symposium, we held a community forum to examine this sometimes elusive concept more closely. Participants explored and critiqued the current description of expert learners—learners “who are, each in their own way, resourceful and knowledgeable; strategic and goal-directed; and purposeful and motivated” (adapted from Ertmer & Newby, 1996, and included in the UDL Guidelines 2.0, 2011).

Let’s continue that fruitful conversation together.

  • What does expert learning look like, sound like, and feel like?
  • What matters most in a description of expert learners?
  • What’s missing from the current description?
  • How might we more fully articulate the values of UDL through a description of expert learning?

Join us for an interactive deep dive into expert learning and let’s move the concept of expert learning forward.
