Learning backed by research

The CAST team researches, designs, develops, and innovates solutions that make education more inclusive and effective for all learners, including those with disabilities and other marginalized populations. We partner with diverse organizations and experts to enhance our understanding and evidence base, ensuring that all recommendations are grounded in data.

How and why we conduct our research

Research drives our initiatives, informing the design, development, testing, and dissemination of innovative educational practices, products, and recommendations that the global community can trust.

CAST’s research is grounded in our deep commitment to reducing barriers and increasing access for all learners. We partner with schools, districts, and organizations to find solutions and learn more.

We select our research topics based on feedback from administrators, educators, students, and their families to explore real-world barriers and solutions. We’re dedicated to  finding answers, offering concrete evidence-based solutions, and improving outcomes.

“UDL has come to dominate the field because of its broad applicability and its research foundation in the learning sciences, both cognitive and neurosciences.” –National Education Technology Plan, U.S. Department of Education

How CAST’s research informs our work

Our research approach is unique among the nation’s education research organizations, because of its rich commitment to co-design and the research-to-practice loop. Through the consistent process of innovation, assessment, and integration, we can give so much to students, educators, and institutions.

Through our research, we’re able to:

  • Provide benefits to all students, including those with disabilities or who are underserved.
  • Capture students’ voices and ideas, to inform prototypes, products, and solutions.
  • Gather students’ feedback about the design while utilizing the development cycle through all phases.
  • Provide students with the necessary tools to express their strengths and needs as learners.

For educators and districts, our research provides:

  • Innovative learning tools and interventions reflecting UDL principles.
  • Cutting-edge training in UDL from CAST, where UDL was created and is continually evolving.
  • Ongoing support and training around particular tools or interventions.
  • Stipends for teachers and schools.
  • Iterative co-design work.
