UDL Product Certification

The UDL Product Certification, developed in partnership with Digital Promise, is designed to evaluate how strongly an edtech product’s design is aligned to the UDL framework.

Getting UDL Certified

Products must first demonstrate their transparent communication about accessibility practices and conformance to customers by achieving the Accessibility Baseline. Next products show how they are aligned to the UDL Guidelines, demonstrating how the product’s design features provide multiple ways for learners to engage with the learning experience, access the learning materials, and express their knowledge and skills. Organizations may coordinate the certification for one or more products.

Apply for both parts of the Product Certification on Digital Promise:

Accessibility Baseline for UDL Product Certification

A certified product provides information about its conformance to the accessibility principles defined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in an accessible format, and this information is easy to locate on the product developer’s website for those who need to make purchasing and/or adoption decisions related to the product. This certification serves as a prerequisite for the Alignment to the Universal Design for Learning Framework certification.

Alignment to the Universal Design for Learning Framework

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is core to a certified product’s design. The product prioritizes learner access and engagement and considers learners’ interests and motivations. It ensures learners have multiple ways to gain comprehension, and it provides multiple ways for learners to share their knowledge and ideas.

These certifications were developed in collaboration with an advisory board of school leaders, solution providers and implementation specialists who support schools and districts. In addition, the foundation of these certifications is rooted in research from the implementation and improvement sciences, as well as research from across the UDL field.
