Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides educators with research-based strategies to support literacy instruction and help each learner succeed. CAST has designed a complimentary set of three online, self-paced courses to introduce educators and instructional leaders to the UDL framework as a powerful tool for reducing barriers specific to literacy instruction. These courses combine live interaction with self-paced content to provide a flexible learning environment. Participants will engage in a 60-minute live presentation, engage with approximately 2–3 hours of self-paced materials, and have the option of attending a live debrief session at the end of each course.

Participants of can choose a course in one or more of the three following topics to best meet their learning goals:

  • Designing for Engagement: Explore how to create learning environments that foster motivation, support persistence, and promote meaningful connections to content that ultimately supports comprehension and vocabulary skills.
  • Designing for Representation: Educators and instructional leaders will learn how to design literacy environments that honor the diverse ways students process and create meaning from content. Participants will lean into strategies that support access to complex texts, develop background knowledge, and provide multiple formats for understanding new literacy concepts.
  • Designing for Action & Expression: Educators and instructional leaders will redesign a literacy activity or lesson aligned to the UDL framework. In addition, participants will explore how to support learners in expressing their understanding in ways that align with their strengths, preferences, and goals—whether through writing, speaking, visuals, or other modalities.

What you will learn

  • Strategies to implement UDL throughout literacy instruction while maintaining rigor
