We envision a world where all learning experiences in school, the workplace, and life are intentionally designed to elevate strengths and eliminate barriers so everyone has the opportunity to grow and thrive. Reinforcing our resources and efforts is robust research and a dedication to the learning sciences.
CAST is a global leader in the inclusive education movement.
As a pioneering nonprofit in education research and development, we created the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework and Guidelines to transform learning. Our expertly crafted resources have been embraced globally, revolutionizing education to be more inclusive and accessible for all learners.
Our talented team of employees shares that passion for learning and equity. They are specialists in education, the learning sciences, instructional design, literacy, policy analysis, UX and graphic design, software engineering, and first-rate administrative and executive skills.
We are committed to providing the teaching and educational community with the tools they need to empower learners in schools, universities, workplaces, and communities.
“The ultimate purpose of UDL is not simply to help learners master a specific body of knowledge, but to master learning itself.” David Rose, CAST's Co-Founder & Chief Education Officer, Emeritus
In 1984, amid technological advancements and school reform, a group of education researchers founded the Center for Applied Special Technology or CAST, to harness new technologies for improving education for students with disabilities.
As they refined their approach, they developed UDL, a flexible method to enhance education for all learners.
Today, UDL guides CAST’s research and development, leading to innovative solutions in curriculum planning, software development, policy, teacher preparation, and education research through strategic collaborations.
“I always refer to CAST as the Mothership of UDL. It is the source of research, innovation, and a rich history that includes the evolution of the framework.” Katie Novak, Author of UDL Now! and Founder of Novak Education
CAST leads, inspires, and convenes a global community to design equitable, inclusive learning experiences through our Universal Design for Learning framework.
