Poetry and Art Anthology Project (Grade 6): Introduction
Pat Previte, a sixth-grade general education teacher in Ipswich, MA, implemented this weeklong project as a culminating activity after doing a three-week Holocaust novel unit with her students. Students spent three weeks reading three novels based on the Holocaust: Number the Stars by Lois Lowry; A Traitor Among Us by Elizabeth Van Steenwyck; and Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. The novels were available in print and electronic format, with text-to-speech support. Pat completed this unit as part of the Thinking Reader project with CAST. The students wrote poems and poet's notes, and created artwork in response to the novels. Each of these pieces was compiled into an anthology for display in the school.
