Improving Reading Comprehension Strategy Instruction for Middle School and High School Students

Low reading achievement is a genuine and consequential problem for many middle and high school students. Unfortunately, reading comprehension is an extremely difficult skill for many students to master and many content teachers do not have the needed methods, tools, and professional development to easily embed reading comprehension strategy instruction into their teaching. Many students, including those with learning or reading disabilities, English language learners, and students who fail to engage with reading, struggle to develop reading comprehension.

This institute provides participants with a research-based approach to improving reading outcomes across content areas and provides them with strategies and tools that are feasible to implement and consistent with their curriculum goals and instructional approaches. Specifically, participants will:

  • Explore evidence-based strategies and techniques for improving reading skills of middle and high school students and learn about UDL and its application to reading across content areas
  • Learn about and be given resources related to reciprocal teaching and strategy instruction
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the exploration of varied techniques and technologies that support reading across the curriculum

Who Should Attend: Middle and High School Teachers, Special Educators, Department Chairs, Curriculum Coordinators, and Instructional Technology Specialists

Cost: The fee for CAST’s two-day institutes with follow-up support is $795 per person. A minimum of 18 participants is required to run an institute, with a maximum of 40 participants.
