Joseph M. Sullivan

Principal, Gloucester (MA) High School

Joseph M. Sullivan brings to the advisory council more than 35 years of experience in school administration. As principal of Gloucester (MA) High School since 1998, Dr. Sullivan has provided organizational leadership in all aspects of administration and instruction for this urban comprehensive public school.

He has implemented full inclusion school wide, introduced a "multiple pathways" model to increase learning options for diverse students, and developed partnerships with community organizations to provide flexible learning programs for at-risk children.

Prior to coming to Gloucester, Dr. Sullivan was Principal of Carver High School and Vice Principal at Wakefield High School, both in Massachusetts, and was Principal of Schools for the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Concord.

From 1965-2003, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves, earning the rank of Full Colonel as he provided leadership for a variety of medical and combat support units.

He holds a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell; master's degrees in teaching from the University of Maine and Salem State College; and a bachelor of arts from Providence College.
