Sally Bowles

Director, Board of Directors, Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation

Sally Bowles has a long and distinguished record of achievement in public service. Currently, Ms. Bowles directs the Board of Directors of the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, a San Mateo, Calif.-based private charitable organization whose Learning Disabilities Program provides resources and direct services to children with learning difficulties and their parents.

Prior to joining the Schwab Foundation, Ms. Bowles helped to establish the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation and served as its first president from 1993 to 2003. The Foundation originated the Coordinated Campaign for Learning Disabilities, the first national public education campaign about learning disabilities in the U.S.

Ms. Bowles has also served as Executive Director of the Committee for South African Development during Nelson Mandela’s presidency, as a consultant to the Rockefeller Foundation, as Connecticut’s Medicaid Director, and as an advisor on education to New York City Mayor John Lindsay. She began her career as a member of the core working group that drafted the executive order to establish the Peace Corps.

Ms. Bowles joined CAST’s Board of Directors in 2003. She was elected vice-chair in 2006 and the chair in 2007.
